True, they read an announcement at last week's service meeting. My guess is that if this is sucessful, they will start putting the KMs there for the PO/Sec to download and distribute. Could save a bundle.

Was the CA expense ever justified to the elders?
by AK - Jeff inat every single circuit assembly i attended, there was always the inevitable 'accounts report'.
it was pretty much always the same;.
"our expenses for the operation of this fine spiritual meal is estimated to be $18,000.

unconfused,
How long did it take for that elder to get "removed"? I'll bet the next CO visit.
Good for him. Another advantage is that he won't have to worry about giving CA/DC parts again!!

Exactly. At the most recent CA I attended (physically not mentally) the expenses were around 4k but 4k more went to the WWW & kingdom hall building fund. Interestingly, enough was collected on day 1 to cover the operating expenses but it was the contributions to Mother that resulted in the deficit. Also, the money sent to the WTS was more than at the previous CA (they were crazy enough to read last years stuff and I actually paid attention!)
I think the business meetings varied from circuit to circuit. The one I was at the longest made the line item information available and read it at the meeting (large categories - operational expenses, CO expenses, DO expenses). Remember, the circuit pays for the COs housing (usually an apartment in a KH but still has utilities and a set amount per month for upkeep).
Usually, those business meetings were attended by half the circuit elders and the object was to get out as quickly as possible. Read item, discussion (pause for about half a second), ok then do we have a motion to approve, "so moved", second?, "I second", all in favor? meeting dismissed.
Edited to add: Just remembered that several years ago, the circuit elders decided to send a percentage of the surplus (I think maybe 90%, can't remember the details) to the WWW. They had done that historically and that really makes sense (save some for the circuit account and just give the rest to HQ). Well, apparently something changed one year when the assembly overseer told the elders that he was informed that was no longer acceptable and that the elders had to vote on the contribution to the WTS at the business meeting (held Sat lunch). Several objected (including the assembly overseer) saying that the expenses were being driven up unnecessarily. And, it was "suggested" that the circuit donate XX which I found out later was the amount per publisher that Sir82 mentioned. Who says the WTS doesn't tithe?

Regional Building Committee decisions boggles even a dubs mind...
by undercover inso i'm talking to someone from my old hall and he tells me that there are some disgruntled jws (including elders) who feel like some bad decisions are being made by the rbc.. for instance, one hall needed a new roof.
an elder, in the construction business, made a deal with a local non-jw roofer that if the brothers cleared off the old shingles, the roofer would come in with his crew and do the new roof for x amount of dollars.
the rbc elder in charge got wind of that arrangement and nixed the deal.

Wow, just Wow. I was under the impression that everything was volunteer and that the RBC was used just to coordinate the work and get deals on materials.
undercover, can you explain to me how the situation you knew about worked? Was the "brother" contractor a department head? Aren't there some employment laws that are being violated here? Being told you're working on a volunteer project and then the person you're working for getting paid seems not only unethical but illegal.
I've seen situations where a congregation had a brother perform work (like making a sign) and we wanted him to charge us the normal price (since it was his business and we just wanted the work to go to a brother rather than someone else). He refused to accept payment for his time and just charged us for materials which was very inexpensive. But, I've not seen anything about RBC contractors.

Judicial Committee actions today vs 30 yrs ago
by Gregor inwhen i served on jcs in the '70s the majority concerned sexual infractions.
i am only guessing, but i get the impression that today it may be "apostasy" in the majority, or at least running neck and neck with sexual sins.. does anyone have any insight on the current mix of jc matters?
.
-
Doubting Bro
My experience was about 90% sexual "sins" and the rest substance abuse (drugs, alcohol). I was only an elder for about 10 years and in that time, NEVER saw an apostacy charge. Once, I've been in a congregation where someone was DF'ed for apostacy.

Follow-up to Kingdom Hall burning down......
by WingCommander insince it's cold here in the northeast, they'll remove everything down to the slab, and then do a quick-build in february.
of couse, they had their meetings the next day after the fire....don't want to have anyone get out of the routine of mind-numbing cult meetings!!!
they are going to be going to yorkana congregation, and boy does that congregation need more numbers!!
-
Doubting Bro
The article said that the fire was a result of faulty installation of the recessed lighting. Gee, sloppy workmanship at a Quick Build(tm)??? I'm actually suprised this doesn't happen more often. Then they go and brag about how quickly they can throw a new building up. How about slowing down a touch and make sure things are done CORRECTLY?
I wonder how the KHAA handles these situations? Does the congregation continue to pay the same allocation per publisher or if you have a loss, does your "insurance" go up like with a normal carrier?

Yep, I Gave A Public Talk
by mavie incan we see the fulfillment of this today?
these are just a few of the prophecies recorded in the bible which have seen their fulfillment.
another evidence of divine authorship can be found in the practical guidance the bible gives.

I gave few in my time.... I must admit that I enjoyed it...It does wonders for your ego to visit another congo and be given the star attraction treatment - and you could even count it as hour in the Field Service !
I felt exactly the same way. Interesting, many elders in my area decided giving PTs was too much of a hassle and often out of say 7 elders, only 2-3 would actually give talks out.
To me it was 1) easy service and 2) fun. Many places you were treated really well and in others no so much. Giving talks on the CA & DC was even more ego boosting.

Last week, they talked about how the 7 trumpet blasts were the 7 district conventions in the 1919-1926 period. Ok, I know hard core JWs that roll their eyes at that craziness, as I did when I was a zealot. However, I never noticed this:
17.The seven angels continue to sound their trumpets, signaling historic events here on earth. Dedicated Christians have a great responsibility to continue proclaiming these announcements to the world.
Interesting because I went door to door my entire life and never once proclaimed the particulars of those resolutions to anyone NOR did I even know what they were!! A trumpet blast is a short sound, not a 100 year sound. Even if you buy the fulfillment at the DCs how does the above statement make any sense??
2 John now sees a great sign—one of outstanding interest for God’s people. It introduces a thrilling prophetic vision, the meaning of which was first published in March 1, 1925 issue of The Watch Tower in an article entitled “Birth of the Nation” and then again in 1926 in the book Deliverance. This brilliant flash of bible understanding became a historic marker in the advance of Jehovah’s work.
Really??? A historic marker?? Ask any JW say 30 minutes after the CBS this week what historic marker was published in 1925 and see how many can answer. Not exactly up there with man walking on the moon.
I started to comment on how the anointed Christians are the Bride of Christ, yet offsping of Jehovah's "heavenly" organization of which Jesus (also offspring of God) is the head of but I actually need to draw a chart to figure out what they are trying to say.

I had about a 30-45 minute discussion with my wife Weds night about this. She was not overly shocked at the settlements because she has friends that we abused by elders and saw that the org doesn't do anything to help. She said that many religions tolerated this sort of behavior in the past but now things are different. I agreed this is a problem with religions in general but pointed out that the witnesses are supposed to be different (Gods channel and all). She said Paul warned about oppressive wolves arising in the congregation. However, I pointed out that the situation Paul spoke about was the "great apostacy" according to the WTS and since the appointment in 1919 of the FDS, the WTS teaches that we are in a spiritual paradise. So, I asked, which is it?
The conversation was one of the best I've had with her about the WTS. She said that I was very black and white, but I did make the point that when you claim to be Gods chosen people, that is a huge standard to live up to. Of course, the "org is not perfect" card was played. My response? Perfection isn't what I'm looking for, doing the right thing by making sure child rapists are off the street, the action that 99% of the general population would take, that's what I'm looking for.
I also told her I was upset that funds donated to further the preaching work was being used to settle these cases. She said the victims deserved to be compensated and she was glad the WTS settled! I agreed that these poor folks have had their lives screwed up and the WTS should have to pay. So, at least that was one point that we could agree on.
Not sure how this will effect her, but I do know that she did not question the validity of the claims or think it was some sort of "apostate" campaign by Satan. So, overall I hope it will lead her to question other things.

by Dogpatch inanyone else care to comment on the watchtower's media site response to the pedophile issue?

I find the WTS response extremely lame. Also, if they're doing such a great job, why decline comment for the NBC story?? They are right on one point, there have not been enough lawsuits over this issue. I hope that every single person who has been harmed by the WTS stupid policies and lack of action by both local elders and Bethel files a lawsuit aginst the elders personally involved and the WTS. I told my wife last night that I thought this was the tip of the iceberg. I hope that the floodgates open.
